The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich

“he was amazed at her courage. He grimaced in shame – unlike him, his wife was afraid of nothing.”

– Louise Erdrich

Another fabulous book our family read together about a darling Native American, Anishinabe, girl. We listened to Erdrich’s novel in the car, on the way to Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. Obviously, the Anishinabe and surrounding tribes differ from the ancient cliff dwelling tribes further South West; however we found the stories of family, love, changing, and growing while gathering food, building fires, and using hides and bones fascinating and beautiful.

Little Frog’s perspective matures throughout the novel, demonstrating Erdrich’s literary craft.
